Sunday, 23 February 2025 – Eskom has announced the sudden escalation of Stage 6 load shedding from 1:30 AM, following a series of unit failures at key power stations.
The latest crisis stems from multiple unit trips at Camden Power Station, which compounded the strain on an already fragile grid. Prior to this, Stage 3 load shedding had been implemented due to additional breakdowns at Majuba Power Station and a unit failure at Medupi, collectively removing 3,864 MW of generation capacity from the system.
With planned maintenance already accounting for 7,506 MW, Eskom stated that Stage 6 load shedding was necessary to replenish emergency reserves and stabilize the grid for the week ahead.
A media briefing is scheduled for 11:00 AM today, where Eskom executives will provide further details on the power crisis and the outlook for the coming days.
