Eskom Adjusts Load Shedding to Stage 3 for the Coming Week

Continued Load-Shedding: Eskom has revised its power management strategy, declaring that Stage 3 load-shedding will be in effect until 05:00 on Thursday, 18 January 2024.

Shift from Stage 4: Originally planning Stage 4 from 16:00 on Sunday, 14 January, the utility has dialed back due to an improvement in generation capacity. “Due to the sustained generation performance and the recovery of emergency reserves for the week ahead, Stage 3 load-shedding will continue to be implemented until 05:00 on Thursday, 18 January 2024,” Eskom announces.

Current Capacity Challenges:

• Maintenance: 8,843MW of generation capacity is offline for planned maintenance.
• Breakdowns: An additional 13,981MW is currently unavailable due to breakdowns.

Anticipated Recovery:

• Regaining Power: Eskom expects to restore 2,721MW of generating capacity to the grid by Wednesday, 17 January.
• Team Effort: “Eskom Power Station General Managers and their teams are working diligently to ensure that the 2,721MW of generating capacity is returned to service by Wednesday,” the utility stated.

Monitoring and Communication: Eskom assures that it will keep a close watch on the power system and update the public on any significant changes.

Avoiding Stage 4: “The slight improvement in generation capacity as well as the recovery of emergency reserves for the week ahead has enabled Eskom not to implement Stage 4 load-shedding from 16:00 today as previously communicated,” Eskom concludes.
