Johannesburg – South Africans will have to prepare for a week of fluctuating power cuts as Eskom implements a dynamic load shedding schedule in response to ongoing generation capacity challenges.
Starting this evening, Eskom has confirmed that Stage 1 load shedding will be in place until the early hours of Monday. The utility will then oscillate between Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 load shedding as the week progresses.
Rotating Power Cuts The frequent changes in load shedding stages come as Eskom grapples with a significant shortage in generation capacity. The schedule for the upcoming days is as follows:
- Sunday, 12 November: Transition to Stage 1 starting at 4 PM.
- Monday, 13 November: Morning will begin with Stage 1, switching to Stage 2 from dawn till late afternoon, followed by Stage 3 into the night.
- Tuesday, 14 November to Friday, 17 November: A repeating pattern with nights starting in Stage 3, shifting to Stage 1 in the mornings, and returning to Stage 3 for the evenings.
Eskom has indicated that unplanned outages, which include the delayed service return of the Koeberg Unit 1, account for 17,270MW of the capacity shortfall, with another 5,265MW unavailable due to planned maintenance.
Despite the constraints, there’s a glimmer of hope as Eskom anticipates the return of approximately 5,300MW of capacity over the week. The utility’s teams are said to be working round the clock to expedite this process.
Public Cooperation Sought With the evening peak demand estimated at 25,529MW, Eskom appeals to the public to minimize electricity use, particularly during the critical hours of 5 PM to 9 PM. Actions such as turning off geysers and pool pumps can make a meaningful difference.
Eskom extends gratitude to all who contribute to demand reduction efforts, emphasizing that such measures are vital for managing the system’s load and mitigating the severity of power cuts.
As the situation remains fluid, Eskom commits to keeping the nation informed on any further changes to the load shedding status.
